You are the chairperson of the school’s Environmental Protection Club. You are going to organize the ‘Stop Making Waste Campaign’. Write a speech for sharing in the assembly and explaining to students why this event is important and why they should join it.

Good morning teachers and students,

I am the chairperson of the school’s environmental protection club. Our club is going to organize the ‘Stop making waste campaign’ due to the different kinds of wastage problems in recent years. I am going to explain why protecting our environment is important.

To begin with, the wastage problem is getting more serious in the recent ten years in our city. In general, there are two aspects of wastage which are really common in urban life. Let’s talk about food waste. According to online research from Green Society, most students love to eat out with friends rather than eat lunch or dinner at home. When students eat out with friends, they can’t control how much they want to eat because the menu and the food are fixed. Thus, some students may not be able to finish the food in front of them and the food eventually become food waste. According to a study, the total average weight of food waste in Hong Kong is 1.3 billion kilograms, which is equal to the weight of 20000 cars. It is a gigantic number. If we don’t reduce food waste right now, our city could become a place full of rubbish. It will also cause a huge damage to the environment.

Secondly, plastic waste is just as serious. I believe that everyone has their experience in using disposable chopsticks or plastic lunch boxes. Plastic is a material that even incinerators can’t destroy. After we throw plastic products into the rubbish bin, it’s actually already a non-eco-friendly act.

In the campaign we organize, our club members will illustrate the disadvantages of big wastage. I believe the students who participate in our campaign will learn and know more about the knowledge of protecting the environment. Every kind of pollution can affect our lives. As citizens, we have the responsibility to solve these problems by ourselves.

Another thing we want to achieve in this campaign is that we don’t just want students to know about the problem, but also why it is essential for them to take action. We know that we all share the same Earth. If we don’t solve the wastage problems, it will bring negative effects to our next generation, including our sons and our grandsons. That is the reason why our club is named by the word “protection”. We aim to protect nature and creatures. We aim to solve any environmental problems. We aim to explain to every single student and our next generation the reasons why we have to protect the Earth. We aim to let every one of us know more about the consequence of not doing anything.

Our “stop making waste campaign” will be held on 3rd March. At that time, our ambassadors will encourage our students to go green. We will also help those students who want to apply for our activities to do the application. I really hope that I will see you on that day.
