Good morning teachers and students,

Recently, many people are concerned about the wastage problem in Hong Kong. Some people think that this problem still doesn’t have any effect in Hong Kong. However, the problem has become more and more serious. That’s why I am going to organize the ‘Stop Making Waste Campaign’. I am going to tell you why you need to join it.

First, there many types of wastage in Hong Kong. Let me tell you two examples: plastic waste and food waste. Hong Kong people are wasting lots of plastic products every day, such as plastic bottles, bags and packaging. It is common to see people buy bottle drinks from stores. Why? It is because they think it is convenient to drink from plastic bottles. However, when people finish drinking, they will throw the bottles immediately in the rubbish bin. They don’t want to wash the bottle and reuse it. In addition, some people still use a lot of plastic bags. Some customers often ask for a plastic bag after purchasing the products they want. They think it is easier to take their products home. However, these plastic bags are actually not necessary. Plastic bottles are also a serious source of pollution. It is not common to see people recycle plastic bottles by putting them in recycle bins. These plastic bottles can only be transported to the landfills.

Second, food waste is also a serious problem in Hong Kong. According to recent studies on the Internet, Hong Kong creates tons of food waste every day. Many people just throw away the food because they have ordered too much when they are having a gathering. The retailers of food also throw away lots of food because they think the look of the food is no longer suitable to sell. Supermarkets also throws away a lot of food because it has been placed for a long time.

The problem that affects people immediately is the landfills in Hong Kong. Our landfills are almost full. The food waste in the landfills is smelly and terrible. The citizens who are living near Lohas Park have to smell it every day. All these types of waste have caused air, water and land pollution.

How can we save the environment? The answer is simple. We need to reduce or even stop making waste. That is the aim of our campaign. In our campaign, we are going to tell our fellow students how they can protect the environment. First, it is very hard not to carry water with a plastic bottle. But if you need to use one, you need to wash it and put it into the recycling bin. We can collect our plastic bottles at home, wash them, and put them in the bins. Also, bring a reusable bag for shopping. In our event, we will share the message of environment protection so more people will pay attention to it. Also, we can contribute excessive food to the food bank, which is a non-profit organization providing food to the poor.
