Dear Editor,
Food wastage is a serious problem in Hong Kong. Of all the solid waste, about 36% is food waste which is disposed of at landfills every year. This problem has aroused public concern that we need to take actions to reduce the food wastage. In this writing, I am going to talk about the problems resulting from wasting food and provide some solutions to solve the problem.
First of all, our landfills will be saturated soon if we do not reduce our food waste. It is known that we generate tones of food waste every day, This huge amount of food waste will occupy a large area of the landfills. Therefore, our landfills will not be able to accommodate any of the rubbish in the near future when we continue to waste so much food each day.
Besides, dumping the food into the landfills squanders a lot of our natural resources. Making a delicious dish requires different kinds of raw materials. All these materials are exploited from our surrounding environment. When we waste tones of food each day, we are destroying our living place. As a result, we will bear the cost in the future.
As we are facing a huge amount of food wastage in the city, we need to think out some ways to solve the problem.
First, we have to order enough food in a bid to avoid food wastage. Each time when we dine out, although there are many choices of delicious food that we want to eat. We need to think if our stomach can accommodate all of the food. When there is the excessive food after the meal, we can pack the remained food to home as a meal for our next day.
Also, restaurants can join the "Save Food Campaign" by donating the food to the needy in order to reduce the food wastage. Each day, the restaurants can sort out the extra food and send to different welfare organisations. Not only can these organisations distribute the food to the needy, it can help reduce the food wastage which is a good way to protect our environment.
In conclusion, “eat enough, waste less” is the most effective way to reduce the food wastage. Everyone of us should have this good eating habit in order to save the resources we have and save our environment.
Yours faithfully,
Zhan Yichun
